Every generation has something to give. Every generation has something to receive.
Light Between brings older adults and younger people together through meaningful one-to-one relationships that build connection, purpose, and belonging.
Loneliness isn't a problem that one generation solves alone
At Light Between, no one is here to “fix” anyone. We believe every generation carries something worth giving and something worth receiving. Through genuine conversation, shared experiences, and mutual curiosity, connection becomes a place where both people can grow.
Loneliness is more than a feeling.
In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness and social isolation a public health epidemic. Research summarized in the advisory found that lacking social connection can increase the risk of premature death as much as smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day. Social disconnection is also associated with increased risks of heart disease, stroke, dementia, anxiety, and depression. But loneliness does not belong to one generation. Older adults may experience retirement, loss, changing family roles, reduced mobility, or fewer opportunities for meaningful connection. Younger generations may be surrounded by people and technology yet still struggle with belonging, identity, meaningful relationships, and direction. Light Between creates a bridge between those two experiences. Source: U.S. Surgeon General, “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation,” 2023.
Why Generations Need One Another
Finding identity & connection
Younger generations
Young people are often navigating questions like: Who am I? Where do I belong? What kind of life do I want to build? Erik Erikson described adolescence and young adulthood as periods shaped by Identity vs. Role Confusion and Intimacy vs. Isolation—developmental tasks involving identity, direction, belonging, and meaningful relationships. Light Between can offer younger people something the internet cannot: lived perspective from someone who has already traveled further down the road.
Having something meaningful to give
Adults & older adults
Erikson described Generativity vs. Stagnation as a stage centered around contributing to others and guiding the next generation. Teaching, mentoring, sharing knowledge, and investing in younger people are classic expressions of generativity. A lifetime of experience does not lose its value when a career ends or children grow up. It can become wisdom for someone else.
A life worth sharing
Later adulthood
Erikson described later adulthood through Integrity vs. Despair—a period of reflecting on one's life and integrating its accomplishments, struggles, choices, and meaning. Sharing stories with someone who genuinely wants to listen can create an opportunity for reflection while allowing those experiences to continue influencing another generation. A story doesn't end when it is remembered. Sometimes it becomes direction for someone else.

Different stages of life. Different needs. Something to offer each other.
Younger generations can bring curiosity, energy, presence, new perspectives, and connection. Older generations can bring wisdom, lived experience, perspective, encouragement, and direction. Light Between creates the space where those strengths can meet. Every generation has something to give. Every generation has something to receive.
Connection begins with one conversation
We’re Starting Small Light Between is currently preparing to pilot our intergenerational program with adults age 18 and older. Our first pilot will thoughtfully connect younger adults, age 18+, with older adults for meaningful one-to-one relationships built through conversation, shared stories, mutual learning, and connection. Beginning with an adult-only pilot allows us to build the program carefully, learn from our first participants, strengthen our safety practices, and create a thoughtful foundation before expanding in the future.
