Meet someone worth knowing today
Light Between began with a simple belief: every generation has something to give and something to receive. We bring older adults and younger people together for meaningful one-to-one conversations where stories, wisdom, curiosity, and connection can be shared.
What if the next conversation changed your story?
Light Between creates meaningful one-to-one connections between older adults and younger generations. Through conversation, shared stories, and mutual learning, we create opportunities for both people to experience greater connection, purpose, belonging, and direction.
The story behind Light Between
Every generation has something to give. Every generation has something to receive.

Light Between grew from a question I have carried for many years: What if generations that often experience life separately could become a source of connection and purpose for one another? Long before Light Between had a name, I imagined creating a place where younger and older generations could come together and support one another. Over time, that idea evolved into something much simpler: meaningful one-to-one relationships. Through my work as a licensed clinical social worker, I have seen how loneliness, disconnection, uncertainty, and the need to feel valued can affect people at every stage of life. I also began to recognize that different generations often carry something the other is searching for. Younger people can bring curiosity, energy, presence, and a fresh perspective. Older adults carry decades of experiences, stories, lessons, and wisdom that should not disappear simply because a particular chapter of life has ended. Light Between was created to build a bridge between those two worlds—so that one person’s lived experience can become encouragement, connection, or direction for someone else.
The Thinking Behind Light Between
Human beings need connection, purpose, and a sense that our lives matter at every stage of life.
Light Between is informed by both lifespan development and the growing understanding that meaningful social connection is an important part of emotional well-being. Psychologist Erik Erikson proposed that people continue to face important developmental tasks throughout the lifespan. Although our needs change as we grow, many of those tasks revolve around the same questions: Who am I? Where do I belong? What do I have to offer? Has my life mattered? Light Between creates opportunities for different generations to meet those questions together.
Finding identity, belonging, and direction
Younger people are often navigating Identity vs. Role Confusion and Intimacy vs. Isolation—periods of life shaped by questions about identity, relationships, belonging, career, and direction. A meaningful relationship with someone from another generation can provide something that information alone cannot: lived perspective. Older adults can share not only what worked in their lives, but also the detours, mistakes, transitions, losses, and lessons that shaped them.
Continuing to contribute
Erikson described adulthood through Generativity vs. Stagnation—the desire to contribute to others and invest in generations that come after us. Retirement, children leaving home, or changing social roles do not diminish the value of a person's experience. Light Between creates an opportunity for older adults to continue contributing through their stories, knowledge, encouragement, and presence. Instead of simply being recipients of companionship, older participants remain teachers, mentors, storytellers, and contributors.
Finding meaning in what has been lived
Later adulthood is associated with Integrity vs. Despair, when people may reflect on their lives and consider what their experiences have meant. Being genuinely listened to can give someone the opportunity to revisit their story—not simply as something that happened in the past, but as something that may still have value today. A lesson learned decades ago may become exactly the perspective someone younger needs now.
Connection as prevention
Light Between is also designed as a preventive community wellness model. Loneliness and social isolation can affect emotional and physical well-being across generations. Rather than waiting until someone is deeply isolated or struggling, Light Between seeks to strengthen connection, belonging, and purpose earlier. The program is not therapy or counseling. Instead, it creates an accessible pathway into meaningful human connection while helping normalize conversations about emotional well-being. When someone needs support beyond what Light Between can provide, we hope to help connect them with appropriate mental health professionals, community organizations, support groups, and other resources.
Why Intergenerational Connection?
Because the needs of one generation may meet the strengths of another. Younger generations can bring: curiosity, energy, presence, new perspectives, and connection. Older generations can bring: wisdom, lived experience, encouragement, perspective, and direction. Neither generation exists to fix the other. Both have something meaningful to give. Both have something meaningful to receive. And that is the thinking behind Light Between: A life shared can become a light for someone else's path.
